
NEMAS Severe Weather Unit

Welcome to the Severe Weather Unit here at NEMAS... the National Environmental and Meteorological Association. We are a non-profit corporation with the goal of informing and educating the public about our atmosphere and environment. Below are the currently available positions within our office. Each link will take you to an online application to fill out for the position you are looking for. Special instructions will go along with each position. Please also be sure to include the opening number, as you will need to put it on the application.
Lead Forecaster: Opening Number: HW-02-06-009 Number of Positions Available: Five (5)
A Lead Forecaster in the NEMAS Severe Weather Unit must be 21 years of age,
or have at least two years of severe weather forecasting, or be able to pass
a rigorous
examination, related to severe weather processes and forecasting. A Lead
Forecaster does not need to be a meteorology major or a degreed
meteorologist, but those things definitely would not hurt. A Lead Forecaster is
a part of the management of the Severe Weather Unit, and will help the
Forecaster in
Charge (FIC) with management duties as needed. A Lead Forecaster will be an
experienced member of the forecast team, and will have a
good working
knowledge of severe weather, and synoptic and mesoscale meteorology in general,
including radar and satellite meteorology and
interpretation.
Specific
duties for a Lead Forecaster within the Severe Weather Unit will include, but
are not limited to:
- Works in the severe
weather outlook schedule, in regular rotation with the other team members.

Assists Forecasters on-duty with convective outlook work.

Acts as a backup for the Lead Mesoscale Analysts and Mesoscale Analysts.

Helps coordinate nightly conference chats, and any special coordination calls
that become necessary because of specific weather events.

The Lead Forecaster or Forecaster in Charge will issue the Public Severe Weather
Assessment on NEMAS-SWU Day 1 High Risk days.

Forecaster: Opening Number: HW-02-06-009 Number of Positions Available: Ten (10)
A Forecaster in the NEMAS Severe Weather Unit must be 18 years of age, or
have at least two years of severe weather forecasting, or be able to pass
a rigorous
examination, related to severe weather processes and forecasting. A Forecaster
does not need to be a meteorology major or a degreed
meteorologist, but those things definitely would not hurt. A Forecaster will be
an experienced member of the forecast team, and will have a
good working
knowledge of severe weather, and synoptic and mesoscale meteorology in general,
including radar and satellite meteorology and
interpretation.
Specific
duties for a Forecaster within the Severe Weather Unit will include, but are not
limited to:
- Works in the severe
weather outlook schedule, in regular rotation with the other team members.

Assists Mesoscale Analysts on-duty with mesoscale convective analysis and
advisory issuances.

If on-shift, participates nightly conference chats, and any special coordination
calls that become necessary because of specific weather events.

Lead Mesoscale Analyst: Opening Number: HW-02-06-009 Number of Positions Available: Six (6)
A Lead Mesoscale Analyst in the NEMAS Severe Weather Unit must be 21 years
of age, or have at least two years of severe weather forecasting, or be able
to pass a
rigorous examination, related to severe weather processes and forecasting. A
Lead Mesoscale Analyst does not need to be a meteorology major
or a degreed
meteorologist, but those things definitely would not hurt. A Lead Mesoscale
Analyst is a part of the management of the Severe Weather Unit,
and will help
the Forecaster in Charge (FIC) with management duties as needed. A Lead
Mesoscale Analyst will be an experienced member of the forecast
team, and
will have a good working knowledge of severe weather, and synoptic and mesoscale
meteorology in general, including radar and satellite
meteorology
and interpretation.
Specific
duties for a Lead Mesoscale Analyst within the Severe Weather Unit will include,
but are not limited to:
- Works in the mesoscale
outlook schedule, in regular rotation with the other team members.

Assists Mesoscale Analysts on-duty with mesoscale outlook/severe weather
advisory work.

Acts as a backup for the Lead Forecasters and Forecasters.

Helps coordinate nightly conference chats, and any special coordination calls
that become necessary because of specific weather events.

All PDS Severe Weather Advisories must be co-signed by the Forecaster in Charge
or a Lead Mesoscale Analyst.

Chief Map Analyst: Opening Number: HW-02-06-009 Number of Positions Available: Four (4)
A Chief Map Analyst in the NEMAS Severe Weather Unit must be 20 years of
age, or have at least two years of synoptic and mesoscale chart analysis
practice, or be able to pass a
rigorous examination, related to severe weather processes and forecasting. A
Chief Map Analyst does not need to be a
meteorology major or a degreed
meteorologist, but those things definitely would not hurt. A Chief Map Analyst
will be an experienced member of the map analysis
team, and
will have a good working knowledge of severe weather, and synoptic and mesoscale
meteorology in general, including surface and upper air chart
analysis
and interpretation.
Specific
duties for a Chief Map Analyst within the Severe Weather Unit will include, but
are not limited to:
- Works on the analysis
desk, in regular rotation, with other map analysts.

Assigns map analysts sectors of the country to focus on for chart analysis work

Acts as a backup for the Lead Forecasters and Forecasters.

If on-shift, participates in coordinate nightly conference chats, and any
special coordination calls that become necessary because of specific weather
events.
Special

Map Analyst: Opening Number: HW-02-06-009 Number of Positions Available: Twelve (12)
A Map Analyst in the NEMAS Severe Weather Unit must be 16 years of
age, and have at least two years of synoptic and mesoscale chart analysis
practice, or be able to pass a
rigorous examination, related to severe weather processes and forecasting. A
Map Analyst does not need to be a
meteorology major or a degreed
meteorologist, but those things definitely would not hurt. A Map Analyst
will be a dedicated, hard working member of the map analysis
team, and
will have a good working knowledge of severe weather, and synoptic and mesoscale
meteorology in general, including surface and upper air chart
analysis
and interpretation.
Specific
duties for a Map Analyst within the Severe Weather Unit will include, but
are not limited to:
- Works regularly scheduled
analysis desk rotation.

Acts as a backup for the Forecasters and Mesoscale Analysts, only if needed.

If on-shift, participates in coordinate nightly conference chats, and any
special coordination calls that become necessary because of specific weather
events.
